International Conference
“Jews and Russian Revolution”

The Stanford University, November 6-7, 2005

An international conference organized by the International Center for Russian & East European Jewish Studies (Moscow), the Taube Center for Jewish studies (The Stanford University), The Center for Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian studies (The Stanford University) and Hoover Institution (The Stanford University) and timed to the jubilee of the 1905 Revolution in Russia was held in the Stanford University (USA, California) on November 6-7, 2005.

The conference was interdisciplinary in nature; the reports were devoted to the history of Jewish participation in Russian revolutions and of the way Russian revolutions influenced the fates of East European Jews as well as to the reflection of these events in literature, art and the everyday life of Jews who used to live on the territory of the former Pale of Settlement. The chronological frames (1905-1920) that had been defined prior to the conference were not strictly observed; the researchers believed that the influence of the revolution on the life of Russian Jews was evident over a long period of time, that is why  there were presented reports devoted to ethnographic expeditions to the Pale of the Settlement boroughs  undertaken by  V.G.Tan-Bogoraz and his students in 1920-ies (Debora Yalen, the University of California in Berkley) and to Jews in the period of the Big Terror (Tsvi Gitelman, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor).

The conference was accomplished with the symposium (the round table) «Rethinking Jews, Communism, Russia and the Last Century» that was open to public. It was devoted to the problem of rethinking of the Jewish question in the frames of the XX century communistic regime. The symposium was presided by G. Safran. The  presentations were made by O.V. Budnitsky (Russia), professor Z. Gitelman (USA), professor Jeffrey Veidlinger (USA).
